When I bought my house last year and was trying to come up with a sense of how I wanted to approach the overall design and decor, I wanted to eventually have a subtle period authentic sense of the 1950s without going all themed and tacky candy-apple-red-CocaCola-diner. I ended up being really inspired by the colours and images of "modern" Cuba.
One of the effects of the 1962 US trade embargo, has been to force a freeze-frame of the 50s and 60s in Cuba. This is reflected in the homes of native Cubans. The images decidedly do not evoke a sense of "Happy Days" Americana but instead create an interesting political and visual statement of a society placed in an economic time capsule.
